A new set is coming soon, and here's what you should know about it

Only a couple of weeks have passed until Commander Masters has been out (released to the public on 8/3/2023), and we are already seeing more cards previewed for the newest set: Wilds of Eldraine (WOE).

When is Wilds of Eldraine's release date?

Wilds of Eldraine marks the return to Eldraine after we left it behind since Throne of Eldraine, released on October 4, 2019.

This new set will be released on September 8, 2023, and will be the ninety-sevenths Magic The Gathering expansion.

What are the new Mechanics of Wilds of Eldraine?

This set will introduce three new mechanics to the game:

  • Role Tokens
  • Bargain
  • Celebration

Role Tokens are weird to me because there are seven of them, and you can get them in multiple ways, and they enter attached to a creature you control.

The different Role Tokens that exist on Wilds of Eldraine are:

  • Cursed — Enchanted creature has base power and toughness 1/1.
  • Monster — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has trample.
  • Royal — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has ward {1}.
  • Sorcerer — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has "Whenever this creature attacks, scry 1."
  • Wicked — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1, and "When this Aura is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, each opponent loses one life."
  • Young Hero — Enchanted creature has "Whenever this creature attacks if its toughness is three or less, put a +1/+1 counter on it."
  • (Commander) Virtuous — Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for each enchantment you control.

Conversely, Celebration is very straightforward, as it's a static ability if two or more non-land permanents enter the battlefield during a turn. Note that this does not trigger, meaning it won't go to the stack and will occur as soon as the conditions are met.

Finally, Bargain is an ability that allows you to sacrifice an artifact, enchantment, or token as an additional cost to cast a spell. When you do, you get an additional effect explained in the card if you paid the bargain cost.

This can be useful in sacrifice strategies or be part of dedicated sideboard slots.

What else can we expect?

Since this set is a return to Eldraine, we likely get some old mechanics, like Adventure, back, and cards like Beanstalk Wurm are proof of that.

Also, Food cards are back, as shown in cards like Sweettooth Witch, meaning Pauper's favorite cat, Cauldron Familiar, will likely have more tools to play around with.

We are still very early in the preview season, and usually, the last cards to be spoiled are the commons. Still, the full set will be released on August 25th, meaning that by next week, we will get to talk thoroughly about all the commons and reprints that will make an impact, or not, on Pauper.

Top Decks of the Week

Mono Blue Terror - Saturday Challenge Winner

Following the same pattern as last week, the top decks from the Saturday Challenge were not a surprise at all. Seven Hydroblast effects proved good enough to beat a top eight with two burn decks in third and fourth place and two Boros Synthesizer ones in seventh and eighth place. The other two were just Familiars and Mono White Heroic featuring All That Glitters, and speaking about it...

Glitter Squad - Sunday Challenge Winner

On Sunday, an Azorius affinity deck I like to call "Glitter Squad" made was the winner. I love this one for a couple of reasons, but more importantly, because it's very close to the list I featured in my latest video. Biased aside, this deck is strong, but it still has the core problem of not running any removal, and while Metallic Rebuke helps, there are a handful of times when you need to deal, no matter what, against a resolved threat like Standard Bearer. Besides that, the deck is really sweet, but I would consider adding a couple of Gut Shots in the sideboard, just in case.

It's worth noting that two burn decks came in second and third place for Sunday, and while it seems like the meta is diverse, I can't help to think that with seven appearances on the top 32, the meta is just split between Burn decks and decks that have enough of a good sideboard to beat it.

Deck of the Week Award

4c Ephemerate by RGrzywocz

This... deck is quite something. It's like the creator asked, "What are the best creatures with ETB?" and slammed them all in a deck to abuse Ephemerate. It is Simple yet effective, as proven by its latest 5-0 results in a league. Kudos for keeping up the brews coming!

Wrap Up

New cards, new brews, that's how it is these days, with WOTC releasing a set every month. Other format players will likely struggle with their wallets to obtain the cards they need, but for Pauper, it's a blessing, so I am very excited to see the full spoiler list by the end of next week of Wilds of Eldraine.

As always, you can reach me at all my associated links via my Link Tree!

Take care, and I will see you next week!

Where to Play Pauper?

I have compiled a list of places to play Pauper, mostly IRL. The address may vary, but it's a helpful place to start and check if some of them are near you. They may not play Pauper every day, so it's always a good idea to ask before traveling.
